Patterns in the punishment of women

The case of Linda Walker (Teacher who fired airgun at youths freed from jail but conviction stands, May 5) has had wide media coverage, but there are wider issues about the imprisonment of women that merit public debate.

Most women prisoners are mothers who have been convicted of non-violent crime, whose offences could be dealt with by the use of community sentences, which are usually more effective and cost less.
