The number of people released on bail after being charged with murder in Scotland has increased almost 20-fold since devolution. One accused is freed every week, on average, according to figures for last year.

Politicians yesterday criticised the jump from 1999, when only three accused murderers were released on bail, in contrast to 55 last year. In 2003, almost half of all murder accused were granted bail.
