A teacher, who had been arrested and detained after voluntarily attending a police station following allegations that he had assaulted a pupil, was awarded damages for false imprisonment on the basis that his arrest had been unlawful; the arresting officer having failed to show that she had reasonable grounds for believing that his arrest was necessary, as required by the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 s.24(4).
