By all accounts Zoe Johnson, QC, and her team of Charles Foster and Edmund Vickers, did a extraordinarily effective job in defending her client Dhanuson Dharmasena against charges of FGM. So compelling were her arguments that the jury, assisted by Mr Justice Sweeney’s clear and well-considered summing up, took under 30 minutes to return a “not guilty” verdict. The outcome was a tribute, some say, to trial by jury at its best and the enduring influence of Magna Carta — just as we remind ourselves of the significance of the document as a bastion against arbitrary rule.
