The prison population has hit a new high, with the number of inmates now totalling more than 75,550 - topping the record set a year ago by six.

After peaking in April 2004, numbers of inmates in England and Wales had begun to fall, but they have increased over the past few months, BBC News learned.
The number of male prisoners has risen sharply and more inmates are serving long sentences, including life terms.
