The Government admitted defeat last night in the parliamentary battle to allow the police to detain terrorist suspects without charge for up to 90 days.

Lady Scotland of Asthal, Home Office minister, told the House of Lords that the Government would not attempt to overturn the decision of MPs to introduce a lower 28-day limit, even though Tony Blair said the decision could jeopardise national security.
