David Pannick: What replacing a US judge tells us about our own Supreme Court

A liberal president of the United States has the chance to fill a vacancy on the US Supreme Court in election year. Not an episode of The West Wing, but the consequence of the death, earlier this month, of Justice Antonin Scalia. The process of nomination by President Obama, and possible approval by the Senate, illustrates some important lessons about our own Supreme Court.
