David Pannick, QC: Human rights questions ignored by the prime minister

When the Human Rights Bill was being debated in the House of Commons in 1998, Jack Straw, the Labour home secretary, asked whether his opponents were “really going to go into the next election on the promise ‘Vote Conservative and we will take away your human rights’?”. Yesterday’s speech by the prime minister at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham suggested that the answer is a qualified, “Perhaps”.
