Country police raise funds for a better service

A rural police force is so strapped for cash that it is encouraging the public to mount fund-raising ventures to pay for "enhanced" services.

The residents of two Lake District villages have already agreed to buy a laptop computer for their local officer, while elsewhere in Cumbria local businesses are providing the equipment used to record police interviews.
Cumbria Police is unabashed about what some locals have termed their 'begging bowl' approach.
