A major search is under way for a missing five-year-old girl who was feared abducted while out playing near her home.

Hundreds of local residents from Machynlleth in mid-Wales have been helping police hunt for April Jones, who it is claimed was last seen getting into a light coloured van yesterday evening before it drove off.

Tegwyn Evans, who works in the local petrol station and is friends with April's mother on Facebook, told the Telegraph he had seen an appeal for help in finding the five-year-old on the social networking site.

"Everybody's worried," he said. " Everybody, all the locals, we've all been out searching and helping out, you know everybody's been out all night."

April was last seen out in the town riding a bike with a friend before she vanished and Dyfed-Powys Police said they were becoming "increasingly concerned" for her safety.
