Husbands and wives convicted of killing their spouses could escape jail if they have suffered severe abuse over a long time, judges were advised yesterday.

Draft guidelines from an independent sentencing body headed by the Lord Chief Justice say that in most cases victims of domestic violence should expect to go to prison if they kill.
However, such offences should be treated differently from murder, which carries a mandatory life sentence, the Sentencing Guidelines Council said.
