Where the police had seized an item of property in the course of a criminal investigation that belonged to a third party, it could only retain that item so long as was necessary in accordance witht the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 s.22(1) once the suspect had been acquitted of the criminal offence and the item was retained for use in another investigation.
