More people are serving life sentences in England and Wales than in the rest of the European Union combined, a penal reform charity has claimed.

The Prison Reform Trust said there are currently 5,500 "lifers" in England and Wales compared with 3,000 in 2003.
In the EU at the end of 2002, there were just 5,268 life prisoners.
