The Crown Court did not have jurisdiction to exceed the sentencing powers of the magistrates' court in respect of offences for which the offender had been committed by the magistrates' court to the Crown Court for sentence. Its powers were limited by the Powers of Criminal Courts (Sentencing) Act 2000 s.7(1).
