Guidelines given in R. v Hanson (Nicky) (2005) EWCA Crim 824 , Times, March 22, 2005 at para.18 regarding what a summing up should contain in relation to evidence of bad character were not intended to provide a blueprint such that a departure from them would result in a conviction being quashed. There was no rigid formula for a summing up and provided a judge gave a clear warning, the terms in which he or she did so could differ.
