The court gave guidance as to the proper approach to the imposition of sanctions following a finding of misconduct by a police officer. Honesty and integrity in the conduct of police officers were fundamental to the proper workings of the criminal justice system. Where the misconduct involved operational dishonesty, the appropriate sanction would almost inevitably be a requirement that the officer leave the police force.
