Police stripped of power to charge suspect without lawyer's approval

Police officers have been stripped of the powers to charge offenders without the approval of a lawyer from the Crown Prosecution Service in a pilot project that could be introduced nationally.

The move, in several areas including Kensington and Chelsea in west London, follows an overhaul of the CPS to improve efficiency and cut cases being discontinued.
