It was open to the claimant to rely on a lesser defamatory meaning than his pleaded case and, on the determination of a preliminary issue, both the hardback and paperback editions of a book bore the meaning that there were cogent grounds to suspect that the claimant had abused his position as a police officer by colluding in the commission of substantial fraud.
