It was vitally important that the Solicitors Regulation Authority be notified of pending contempt proceedings concerning a present or former solicitor at an early stage so that the court could be assisted by the provision of background information, and could take an informed decision on whether it was appropriate to continue to a substantive hearing where a criminal prosecution was also likely.
