Weird cases: toss of the coin to choose judge

In a case in 1964, Lord Justice Diplock noted that, when coming to a decision, a judge “must not spin a coin or consult an astrologer”. How judges are selected, however, is not so limited. In New Mexico, a judge has just been appointed after successfully calling “heads” in a coin-toss competition.
