Inmates 'used as minders for officers in toughest prisons'

Staff shortages in some jails are so severe that prisoners are being used as minders for officers.

A BBC documentary to be screened tomorrow follows a group of prison service recruits and shows the true extent of the problem in some of Britain's toughest jails.
 In Brixton prison, for example, trusted inmates are enlisted to protect officers from other, potentially violent inmates.
