Assault emergency worker Pilot Scheme

PUBLISHED April 3, 2026
SHARE

HMCTS have introduced a new pilot scheme in London whereby defendants charged with offences of assaulting emergency workers (including cases where the substantive offence relates to an assault on an emergency worker e.g s18 on an emergency worker) will be fast-tracked to trial. This scheme relates to matters which are currently listed in the Crown Court.

These matters will be listed in two dedicated courts at the Central Criminal Court,  one dealing with North London cases and the other with South London cases.

The scheme applies to cases currently listed as far ahead as 2030. As such, members are strongly encouraged to monitor any listing notifications from HMCTS closely, as existing trial dates may be brought forward.

We understand defence firms whose matters are to be listed in April will be notified by early next week. We have been informed that firms and chambers will be provided with notice of any cases which are to be moved.

Members are also encouraged to identify and raise any Case Management issues in such cases at the earliest possible stage.

It may also be prudent to inform clients charged with such offences that the Court may list cases earlier than the original allocated trial date.

Should you have any correspondence relating to these matters, the appropriate email for correspondence will be -  londoncrownbrigading@justice.com

It is also possible that emails will be sent directly from the Central Criminal Court inbox.

If you have any immediate queries, please do not hesitate to contact our president Jason Lartey directly who will be attending a regular Friday meeting regarding this scheme.
