R. v Carter (Stuart Leslie) [2003] EWCA Crim 707, [2003] 2 Cr. App. R. (S.) 88 was no longer a good guide to the applicable starting point in a case of manslaughter involving the use of a knife. A term of 14 years' imprisonment, prior to a discount for a guilty plea, was appropriate for an offence of manslaughter in which the offender had stabbed the victim in response to threats to kill.
