Not above the law

Over the past three years, dozens of journalists have been arrested, prosecuted and in some instances jailed for unlawfully accessing private data from mobile phones or email accounts. Most have been subject to the draconian restraints of police bail, which has limited their movements and jeopardised their jobs and careers. As a result of the various scandals, the newspaper industry has put its house in order, setting up a tough new independent regulator and introducing strict compliance regimes.
