ACPO lead on mental health and disability Chief Constable Simon Cole said:

"At least 15 per cent of police work touches on mental health, including dementia, which is why it is important the service is appropriate in its response.

"ACPO is part of the Prime Minister's Challenge on Dementia champion group aiming to create dementia friendly communities. The champion group is made up of public, private and third sector organisations such as banks, retailers, the emergency services and charities that all have a role to play in understanding and responding to the needs of people with dementia.

"ACPO is gathering information on the initiatives undertaken by police forces across England and Wales to provide an effective and sensitive police response to people with dementia who come into contact with the police. This information will be collated and best practice will be shared with forces to further improve our response to people with dementia nationwide."
